SENIORS SECTION WINTER LEAGUE RESULTS 2019/2020
Thursday 18th June 2020 – Winter League : Quarter Final
Jim Worsley & Laurie Burn versus Alan Clark & Dave Senior
The first nine holes was a close tussle with the Worsley & Burn pairing squeaking a 2 up lead with an eagle from Burn on the 9th, with Senior bringing it back to one up at the 10th, only then to see Burn hit an unbelievable “hole in one” (no roll, no bounce, be it straight down the hole) on the par 3, 11th hole, moving them back to two up…the rest of the match was nip and tuck with Clark winning the 13th with a solid par, going on to see Worsley taking the 14th in holing a tricky par putt of about 5 ft, Burn winning the 15th with a birdie 3, where then coming on the 16th with an honourable halve saw Worsley & Burn taking the match at 3 & 2….the game was played in good spirit with ample levels of competitiveness and sportsmanship.

Thursday 18th June 2020 – Winter League : Quarter Final
Graham Lloyd & Steve Waterman versus Ken Scott & Terry Jones
Playing in what seemed be a steady, but uneventful match, played in good sportsmanship throughout, Scott & Jones were soon to be 3 down after 3 holes, only then being able to play within this disadvantage until such time that Lloyd & Waterman were able to arrest the match at the 16th hole and win 3 & 2.

Tuesday 23rd June 2020 – Winter League : Quarter Final
Steve Duckett & Chris Webb versus Pete Ayers & John Ireland
Ayers & Ireland, after having got off to a slow start losing the first two holes to a birdie and a par from their opponents Duckett & Webb, then started their recovery by halving the 3rd hole and with help of their shots, parring the 4th, next a birdie, a par, a loss, a halve, along with some uncharacteristic putting by Duckett & Webb on the 9th hole, found themselves one up at the turn….. Ayres & Ireland then moved on to increase their advantage by halving the next three holes (two being non shot holes), winning the 13th with a par 3 (again after some erratic play by their opponents) with Duckett not realising that Webb took 2 to get out of the bunker, by hitting his approach from short of the green too strong and then missing the return…by then following this with a clear win of the 14th & 15th holes saw Ayres & Ireland complete a truly worthy place in the Semi Final, by 4 & 2…played in a friendly spirit with good golf all round, but in recognising that the shots advantage by Ayers & Ireland had put serious pressure on their worthy opponents

Thursday 25th June 2020 – Winter League : Semi Final
Jim Worsley & Laurie Burn versus Graham Lloyd & Steve Waterman
Again the “as built” pairing of Worsley & Burn came out the blocks challenging and were 3 up after 3 holes, but then saw Lloyd & Waterman extend a fight back in winning the 5th and 6th with some great short game skills from Waterman on the 6th chipping it stone dead from about 40 yards to win the hole with a par. The next two holes were halved, but with a stunning birdie from Burn on the long par 5, 9th hole, taken took his pairing to a 2 up lead at the turn. Such that their dominance continued with Worsley winning the 10th with a solid par and the 11th hole with a great birdie putt from about 15 ft……albeit that the time and the holes were running out, Waterman won the 12th with a solid par saving putt from about 6 foot., only to be upstaged with the shot of the day, from Worsley, on the long par 3, 14th hole with a putt holed from off the back of the green of about 35 ft for a 2 and the win (reportedly it hit the flag dead centre and went in like a homesick mole)….the game finished with a win on the homeward bound 16th by Burn, giving them the way to the Final, with a 4 & 2 win

Barry Nicholas & Wyn Little versus Steve Lupton & Neil Edmondson

Thursday 13th August 2020 – Winter League : Semi Final
Barry “Dangerous” Nicholas & Wyn “Dynamite” Little versus Pete Ayers & John Ireland
Such that the last of the 2019 “Winter” League matches got underway in the late “Summer” of 2020, it was the long time pairing of Ayers & Ireland that struck early and went into a 3 hole lead, with Ayers in true form sinking two 6ft putts on the 2nd & 3rd holes….it was then that “Dangerous” Nicholas & “Dynamite” Little stepped up and played to halve the next four holes, with winning the 8th hole (with a dubious 12ft putt) and then only able to halve the 9th hole, Ayers and Ireland moved into a comfortable 5 shot lead at the turn….in using the shot allocation Nicholas & Little then struck back again in halving the 10th and 11th holes, and then with a win with a super “Dangerous” birdie at the 12th hole..BUT cometh the man, cometh the dragon, it was Ayers that finally defused their opponents with another 6 ft putt “off the green” to within 6 inches on the 14th hole that won the match 5 & 4 …played in the best of spirit (surely be it that a “drop of scotch” could have helped the putting !!) it was a match played true to the friendship and fair play of the Seniors Section ..
